Writing Life
Jennifer Smith Turner
Jennifer Smith Turner is a New England born writer. She began writing poetry thirty years ago while an English major at Union College in Schenectady, New York. She is the author of Lost and Found, Rhyming Verse Honoring African American Heroes published in 2006 and Perennial Secrets, Poetry & Prose published in 2003 and nominated for the 2004 Connecticut Book Awards. She was nominated for the Connecticut Poet Laureate appointment in 2006. Her range of verse is eclectic in the hundreds of poems she has written. Her work is included in Vineyard Poets, an anthology of poems by Martha's Vineyard writers and in numerous literary publications. She has been featured on National Public Radio's Faith Middleton Show, has appeared on Connecticut Public Television and the Ivanhoe Broadcasting Smart Woman program. She has been a featured speaker at Yale University, University of Pennsylvania Kelly Writer's House, the University of Hartford, Northwestern Community College, Union College, and the University of Connecticut. An engaging speaker, Jennifer makes numerous appearances at national conferences and meetings of various organizations. She is a graduate of Union College, where she earned a Bachelors degree. She received her Masters degree from Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT. Subsequent to her studies she spent twenty-eight years in corporate America holding numerous senior executive positions. She is a member of the Poetry Society of America, The Academy of American Poets, and serves on many boards of academic and non-profit organizations across the country. She presently serves as the President of the Board for the Hartford Stage Company.

Jennifer is very involved in community and civic organizations.She presently serves as President of the Board for the Hartford Stage Company. She is a Trustee of Union College, and a Regent at the University of Hartford where she is on the Strategic Plan and Executive Committees. She is a member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) board of directors and a member of the University of Connecticut's African National Congress Partnership Advisory Board with South Africa and is an ex-officio member of the Greater Hartford Arts Council Board. She formerly served on the Board for Connecticut Public Television and Radio, the Porrath Foundation for Cancer Advocacy, the University of Connecticut Foundation, St Joseph's College, Hartford College for Women, the United Way, and the Boys' and Girls' Club of Hartford and the Foundation for Mental Health. Appointed by former Governor Lowell P. Weicker, she served for six years as a Trustee of the University of Connecticut.
Business Life
Jennifer is the new CEO for Girl Scouts of Connecticut, a position created through the meager of five Girl Scouts Councils currently serving the State, into one State-wide Council. She is the former President/CEO of Smith & Associates LLC, a management consulting company which specializes in assisting organizations in achieving their strategic and operational potential. In 2004 she was appointed by Governor Jodi M. Rell of the State of Connecticut as Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Economic and Community Development. Prior to this, Ms. Turner served as President/CEO of BerkleyCare Network, a subsidiary of WRBerkley Corp. in Greenwich, Ct.
Ms.Turner was a leading change agent at Aetna Life & Casualty, one of the nation's Fortune 50 companies, where for ten years she worked in a variety of executive level positions. She served as Vice President, Occupational Managed Care, a joint venture between Aetna's managed health care and workers compensation businesses. In 1993, she was selected to lead the development of Aetna's initial venture into the direct delivery of health care services. As Chief Operating Officer of HealthWays/Aetna Professional Management Corporation, and Vice President of Aetna Health Plans, she was responsible for all start-up and operational activities of this new primary care and health care subsidiary. Prior to this assignment, she served as Chief of Staff to the CEO of Aetna Health Plans.
Ms.Turner worked for Travelers Insurance for ten years. She held numerous management positions in their property casualty and financial services operations in the corporate headquarters and field offices. Jennifer interrupted her insurance career in the mid-1980s to serve the City of Hartford as Director of Personnel and then as Assistant City Manager.
