Praise for Perennial Secrets, Poetry & Prose |
Jennifer, thank you so much for sharing your poetry. (and it truly is poetry). Each, in its way is so delicate and penetrating. You have an extraordinary ability to touch deep experiences in an elegant, affecting voice and leave the reader provoked and moved. It is not strident or bullying. It is musical and very persuasive.
Malcolm Morrison Dean The Hartt School University of Hartford
Perennial Secrets are poems that resonate lyrically with pulsating and historical themes. They really speak profoundly to the secrets of human existence and experiences when subjected to so many invisible and nuanced denials. Reading the poems, I found myself constantly gripped with/by some of the powerful imageries that compelled me to think beyond the ordinary and superficial realities of every-day life. But the poems also reminded me of my own growing up, the experiences and agonies I have grappled with. In short, for me, Perennial Secrets are about how we meet the human challenges of survival and flowering despite not being taken seriously and being more or less marginalized. The book deserves very wide circulation.

Jennifer Smith Turner's poetry speaks of the real stuff of life - relationships - with family, friends, lovers, nature, and an acute awareness of race and culture. She takes us on a journey to experience very human reactions to the mundane of everyday life, creating a path that takes us deeper into ourselves with words that acknowledge and evoke emotions all of us know well. Breaking through her 'secrets,' we finish, knowing her and ourselves in greater depth.
